Farmers spraying corn for disease

Area farmers are being encouraged to scout their corn fields for southern rust, a fungal disease that can significantly impact yield.  Over the past two weeks, southern rust cases have increased from a single discovery in the northern part of the state to multiple reports across the state, particularly in Southern Illinois. Weather has been conducive for the development of southern rust which is why the disease is becoming more noticeable.  In the past two weeks, some farmers in White County have contracted aerial applicators to apply a fungicide to fight the disease.
