Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019 marks the date of the death of a friend of mine.
Tom was just nine years old, he suffered from cystic fibrosis and diabetes. He was really a good guy.
Tom was born June 1, 1960. He was always small and somewhat sickly. The doctors in Olney diagnosed him with cystic fibrosis at a pretty young age maybe two years old, and suggested to his parents my brother Jerry McGarvey, and his wife Dolores that they should move him to a dryer climate and maybe his health would improve. They made that move. And Tom’s health didn’t improve. I’m not going to get into details but it was a long nine years for my brother and sister-in-law.
Fast forward to Oct. 1, 1969. I was in Philadelphia Naval Hospital. I got the word late that evening that my friend and nephew Thomas Lynn McGarvey, had died. There was a lot going on in my life at that particular moment, but the moment I got that news nothing else was important.
My brother and his wife we’re living in Fort Defiance, Arizona they made arrangements to bring Tom back to the Grayville area for burial. Times were hard, and there wasn’t a lot of money, but they made that happen.
Tom was a tough little guy. He wouldn’t back up from a fight. I suppose that he got that from his daddy, Uncle David and maybe a little bit of me.
I’ll say all this, just say that after 50 years I still miss Tom McGarvey,
